Your apartment is an unbelievable mess. You haven’t gotten around to cleaning it since that new project at work had you working nights all week.

Last month’s laundry is still sitting in a sad heap in the corner of your bedroom. I’m not going to walk myself to the laundry shop, it seems to be saying.

You promised yourself you’d go to the gym this week. Whatever happened to that?

Even your boyfriend is complaining that he never sees you anymore. I don’t even have time to look at myself in the mirror, much less see anyone else, you tell him jokingly. (He scowls. You’ll deal with that later.)

And now you’re up early. On a weekend. ‘Cause there’s this thing you have to go to. There’s always a thing you have to go to.

Doesn’t matter. You make yourself some coffee, turn up the volume on your girl-vocal electro playlist, slip on that blue shirt you think makes you look ten pounds thinner, and get ready to hustle.

This song is 4:00 PM on a dazzling Wednesday afternoon, work the farthest thing from your mind as you stumble out of your apartment in an oversized T-shirt, frayed denim shorts, and a pair of Wayfarers. This is hearing your flip-flops rhythmically slapping the hot concrete beneath your feet as you feel the warm sun kiss your legs and the light wind toy with your long hair. This is sipping contentedly from a giant plastic cup of iced milk tea you clutch in one hand, the biting cold stinging your tender, moistened palm. This is seeing a beautiful girl in a yellow summer dress, probably about seven years old, bouncing behind her mother as she passes you on the sidewalk, her smooth, sun-dappled cheeks bursting with simple joy.

This is stealing a glance at the guy walking beside you, similarly dressed in a T-shirt and flip-flops, the guy who you may or may not love and who may or may not love you back. This is catching his eye, seeing the boyish grin light up his face, and thinking, holy shit, maybe you’re on your way to loving him, speeding down the fast lane, no time to buckle your seatbelt, right this very second.

This is grabbing his hand without warning. This is seeing the look of mild surprise flash across his face. This, ladies and gents, is seizing the moment.

Now, if only you could actually do it instead of just playing the scene in your head and sighing to yourself like a little bitch.
