SINCE THAT SUNRISE MIXTAPE by Cheekie Albay
In my mind, I can still see how you looked that first day, all those years ago.
I was too young then, too idealistic, too self-conscious, even kind of stupid. But despite my clunky judgment and clumsy self, a part of me was pretty clearheaded about this: you, with your soft smile, soft eyes, those opinions, were a miracle.
Over the years, I’ve kept the image of you nestled snugly in that space reserved for only the nicest thoughts. I moved from job to job, place to place, relationship to relationship, and your face, just as you were that first day, moved with me. In my head, I’d play out a life with you: we’d walk down endless streets, hands held, argue about things we’ll never know the answers to, all the while silently reveling in the thrill of having someone who gets you completely. And the fantasy would make me smile. And then it would make me miserable.
That same part of me that first thought you were a miracle has been waiting for you since.
So. Here we are.
