We’ve never felt this way before. We know that what we have is special.
Sure, we see them all the time, jaded older folks who smirk at us, roll their eyes at us, snigger their scathing sniggers behind our backs. We know what they’re thinking. Love? Ha! These kids can’t possibly know what love is. They’re too young.
On the outside, we bristle a bit. We can’t help it. Blame it on our pride, our insecurity, the thirst for affirmation that comes with our age. But then we share a fleeting glance, a binding look that bridges us for only a fraction of a second, yet is heavy with the weight of afternoons spent riding home from school together, weekend movie dates we hoped would never end, late-night phone calls we struggled through with sleepy voices and heavy eyes, all the tiny, everyday moments only we could find beauty in.
On the inside, we smile a smug smile. On the inside, we clasp hands, a team, for now and longer. We’ll show them. Just wait and see.
